How we choose what goes on this page

Every product here earned its place the same way. We are a small independent site, so let's be transparent about what that means in practice: these are research-based recommendations, not laboratory tests. We don't run a testing facility, and we won't pretend otherwise.

What we actually do before recommending anything:

• Start with the animal's needs, not the product. A hamster wheel gets judged on whether it keeps a spine straight; a cat litter on whether it controls ammonia without perfume that cats avoid. The welfare requirement comes first, the product second.
• Cross-check safety guidance against veterinary and welfare sources — ASPCA, AVMA, AAHA, RSPCA, PDSA and International Cat Care — rather than repeating marketing copy.
• Read the pattern in long-term owner reviews, paying most attention to the one- and two-star reviews written months after purchase. That's where durability problems and design flaws surface.
• Name the downsides. Every card below lists cons as well as pros. If a product only suits some households, we say which.

What we won't do

No brand pays for placement here, and no brand sees a review before it publishes. We don't claim veterinary authority we don't have — Petifys is written by a lifelong pet owner, not a vet, so for anything involving your animal's health the advice is always to speak to your own veterinarian. And we'd rather leave a category empty than fill it with a product we haven't looked at properly, which is why some sections here are short.

We earn a commission if you buy through these links. That never changes which products make the list, and it never changes what we say about them. If a cheaper option is the better buy, we say so.

Before you buy anything

Honestly? Most pet problems are solved by setup and routine, not by purchases. A bigger enclosure, a consistent feeding schedule and daily scooping will do more for your pet than almost anything on this page. The gear below is genuinely useful, but it works best on top of the basics — which is what the guides are for.
